The Quest for Free Food Continues

I was asked by Ron if I would sing in his church choir for Reverend Lillian Hyde's Ordination Mass at Trinity Episcopal Church that occured this evening. It was an elaborite Mass with the bishop, other priests and a children's choir. The serman was given by the ordained priest's husband. That does not happen often. This Mass was followed by a reception. Which means free food.

Art Walk

I dragged my friend George to an art walk since he had not experienced one before. The art walk is in the Historic Downtown Galveston. It is where galleries stay open late to present new art work. Galleries also provide free food and drinks. This is also were you tend to run into people you know. I saw some people from my choir and also talked to some faculty and staff from the college. And of course there were a lot of cute girls walking around. Definitely a good evening.

Just Hanging Out

These 4 days are Thanksgiving vacation which means do nothing work related. So today that is exactly what I did. I pretty much just hung around the apartment and ate at the Rainforest Cafe with George. Just simply avoiding any kind of work.

Happy Turkey Day

Hey, How is it going? Hope you had a great Turkey Day. I had two "dinners" today.
First was with my friend Ron. We went to the Pelican Club for Thanksgiving lunch. The Pelican Club is a members only restaurant. The food was really good along with good conversation.

I then went to Conrad (also a new faculty at the college) and his wife's apartment for Thanksgiving dinner. It was really nice of them and they had the traditional stuff like turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy. It also tasted really good. For desert was pumpkin pie. We then talked for hours after dinner.

It was a good day of good food and great conversation.

Happy Thanksgiving!

A Couple of Free Things for a Couple of Regulars

Every Tuesday George and I go to KFC for lunch for their dollar deal. The deal is 2 pieces of chicken and a biscuit and this deal is only on Tuesdays. It is not something they really advertise so I am not sure if it is just something they do in the Island. Well since we are regulars and they know us they dropped in a couple of free things. They gave us an extra piece of chicken and a drink. The quest for free food continues.

Piano Music

This evening I went to the Classical Concert Series at the UTMB (University of Texas Medical Branch). Tonight was piano music played by the Russian pianist Zoya Shuhatovich. She is a great pianist. She has a light touch and a nice tone.

On the concert was the Sonata in A Major, K. 331 by Mozart.
Not much to say. It is Mozart. Good background music.

Arabesque, op. 18 by R. Schumann.
A lot of noodling. No real direction in the piece.

Polonaise-Fantasia, op. 61 by Chopin.
A Chopin piece I had not heard before. There is a reason why.

I mainly came to the concert to make some community contacts, hear a good musician and to here Pictures. I have heard Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky played on a piano from a recording but I had never heard it live. I like the way she played it. I still prefer the orchestrated version by Ravel. It is much fuller and larger sounding that the composer probably had in his head that the piano does not achieve as well as the orchestra does.

It was good concert.

Free Food? Sure I Will Be There

I had to get to school for a committee meeting at 9a. It is too early for a meeting. Ya I know for some of you that is not early but after getting only 6 hours of sleep each night this week it is early. At noon there was a faculty luncheon/development about WebCT. It is an online network and website that the college uses. The teacher can post syllabus, grades, notes and other stuff with it. The problem is that the school has to set up my account and then each of the students have to have an account set up. It is easier of me just to copy something and give it to them in class. The other problem is that is takes too long to set up the grade book on the site. Way to much clicking. The grade book I use on my computer does not take long to set up. WebCT is good for teachers teaching online classes and since I do not want to teach online classes I do not have to worry about it.

I mainly when for the free food. They had enchiladas, rice and beans. They were good. And for desert they had brownies. I can never pass up brownies so I had 2 of them.

Historic Downtown Galveston

Here are some pictures of the Historic Downtown Galveston that I had taken during the Lofts Tour a month ago.

Here are a some very old (before 1900) and restored buildings.

Here is a sky view of the Galveston skyline taken on top of one of the loft buildings.

This is an example of some cool cloud coloring. The Moody Garden pyramids are in the distance.

Check Out My Name

A few weeks ago my name bar was put outside of my office. It is so cool.

Here is a picture of my office. This was taken near the beginning of the year when it was used as a storage room since there was no full time music professor at the college in 4 years. It is a big office and it is much cleaner now but I wanted you to what it looks like.

And here is my classroom. I can say it is my classroom because this room is only used by me and next semester by other professors in the music department.

Today I hired a new adjunct piano instructor which will alleviate the large amount of piano students I currently am teaching. It will also be nice to have another music professor around.
